Crummy Timing

A warning before anyone scrolls to see the photos in this post: Some people might be disturbed by the content, but my checkbook can attest to a veterinarian's intervention into the matter.

On the morning following Gus's departure across the Rainbow Bridge, I scooped Victor von Bunn up from the floor to put him back into his house. That's when we found this.

Given the lively chance he'd led me on in the attempt to not be put back in to his cage, and his horse-like appetite and resulting Pez-dispenser-esque bottom, the apparent injury came as quite a shock. A all rabbit lovers know if a bunny is playing, eating, and pooping then things are a-ok.

However this was not fine. A call to the vet's got us an appointment first thing Monday morning. The we waited... not calmly except for Victor. He was quite non-pulsed.

We went to the vet expecting to find a corneal scratch. Instead we found an eyeball full of pus. IF we'd been able to get rid of the infection with medication he'd still be blind in that eye. I didn't want to have the stress of trying to fight an infection in what's supposed to be a closed-off place... and Victor didn't need that stress either.

So the vet and I agreed the best course of action was to remove the eye. He did so that afternoon because he was very concerned. Victor's appetite showed the first signs of declining that morning and we didn't want to be dealing with gut stasis on top of the infection.

As to how the eye became infected... a cat's claw, finding a splinter whilst poking his nose where it really shouldn't be (he thinks barriers are a puzzle game to be figured out and beaten), we'll really never know. But for bacteria to get into an eyeball a piercing jab is required.

After the surgery was over the vet called me himself. There were minor complications making this procedure even more challenging. Enucleating a rabbit is more difficult than a cat or a dog in general, but Victor's surgery was more so. The major issue was abnormal dilation of the blood vessels along the optic nerve and the accompanying artery.  The vet explained there are only two reasons for that to happen: a nasty infection or cancer.

He wanted to take xrays while Victor was still groggy enough to hold still. I agreed and waited. I wasn't as worried about Victor's recovery at this point. He was waking up from anesthesia just fine. And the eye was out so either infection or cancer, he'd be more comfortable.

I was able to bring him home the following afternoon. Other than looking a bit like a lapine Harvey Dent, he was just fine. His appetite had come back and he was relaxed enough to give himself a bath. The surgical site was swollen and red, not surprising though. He's munching on fresh dandelion greens in the photo. While he was away, I moved his cage upstairs to make it easier to keep watch during the week.

The xrays didn't show any signs of metastasis, so we opted to not send the eye to histology. That cost would've sent the bill to over $1000... and we still need to pay Gus's last bill when we collect his ashes. The other reason we skipped the histology is our vet told us any cancer in such a young rabbit will be, "quick and devastating." Knowing ahead of time won't do a single thing for him.

So whether it be 12 weeks, 12 months, or 12 years, Victor is loved and cared for.

This morning he's looking quite well. The swelling and redness is gone. I think he'll make quite the dapper pirate once the fur grows back.

The worst part of the ordeal for me is the timing. The worst bit for him is getting medicine twice a day. He feels well enough to fight it, which is fine. That means he's getting better.

That's all for now. I'll hopefully get back to posting about fun and creative things next week. Fingers crossed for no more disasters!

Requiescat in Pace Tempie Bun; 8-1-05 to 9-14-11

September 14, 2011

This news will probably shock most of my blog friends.  I'm still in shock.  As Wednesday's post was automatically going up at 9:00am, I was watching Tempie refuse to eat again.  And she started exhibiting strange neurological symptoms.

I called FH and he came home from work.  We gathered her up and started driving south.During the ride she snuggled close to my hands and dozed most of the way.  A couple of times it looked like she was having tiny seizures.
We don't know how it happened, but somehow her intestines and gut became distended creating a block sort of like a kink in a hose.  To make things worse her gut flora were all out of whack, making her gassy and somehow preventing the fluids we were giving to reach a plug of dried food in her intestines.

There was additional damage to her intestines as well and a necropsy confirmed she would not have had much more time with us.  And none of that time would've been comfortable.

I think every human in the room cried.  She's fought off every other challenge in her life.  I guess she just used up all her strength too soon.

So she went to sleep one last time at the vet's while in her daddy's arms and me stroking her head.  The vet kept saying sweet things to her and she went to sleep.  She was a wonderful companion and can never be replaced.  Binky free my sweet angel.  You are forever loved.

More Frustration

Tempie stopped eating on last Friday (9.9.11).  Sadly we had just taken her to the vet for a molar trim the week before and thus we were mostly broke.  We had just enough cash to get her a local vet who could take digital x-rays... sadly it seemed I knew more about what I was seeing in the picture than they did.
Disapproving bun disapproves.
What it showed could either have been digested food or some sort of fibrous material sitting in her colon.  And lots of gas in her intestines.  When rabbits are blocked like that surgery is possible but not always successful.

So FH and I decided to keep treating her at home with everything we could (freshly pureed pineapple, medicines, Critical Care via syringe feeding, massaging her belly) and hope for the best.  Saturday she stopped swallowing food given via syringe.  She would only take water.  Sunday was an "iffy" day...she passed a marble sized/shaped poo and we're not quite sure how she managed it.  Monday was worse; no improvements and she was visibly weaker.

On Tuesday she passed another marble after I gave her a butt-bath.  When I put her back in a clean cage she immediately started eating her litter.  I ran and got her fresh food and she started eating it and then started drinking water on her own.

At this point we're hoping she continues to improve on her own.  I'll still be medicating her and supplementing her diet with syringe feedings.  Hopefully now she will swallow.  I'm also hoping our regular vet will have received the digital x-rays and have a better idea of what is going on.

Dad Update

Ok.  My dad is out of surgery.  They were able to put pins in his hip without putting him under general anesthesia.  Epidurals are fantastic things.  He was able to stay out of ICU completely and is back on the orthopedic floor.

FH headed back home a couple of hours ago.  I'm going to follow sometime Tuesday morning with the critters.

I should also note that Tempie isn't doing well.  She's lost an eighth of her body mass since we were here to get her teeth done last week.  She was eating normally on her own so we're not quite sure what's going on.  The vet was going to call me today with bloodwork results but he knew what was going on with Dad.  I will hopefully learn something tomorrow.

Goodnight all.  I'm going to go collapse.

Stop the World

I'm ready to get off....

Headed to St. Louis again this weekend for Father's Day and for Tempie to get a recheck.  (More on her later.)

My dad fell and broke a hip last night.  We're still dealing with doctors, the hospital, and figuring out which way to just as far as treatment goes.  (Too many complications to count that make surgery a risk vs. him never walking again.)

So I'll be back eventually.  Hopefully I'll be home eventually.

If It's Not One Thing...

FH and I are taking Tempie to St. Louis tonight.  She's not eating.  Back soon, I hope.

SSDD

I won't translate the acronym in the title.. it's not overly polite but I'm sure you can figure it out.

Tempie needed one molar and her incisors trimmed yesterday.  Now that we're home she's not eating.  Who didn't see this coming?  Ugh.

So I'm syringe feeding her and giving her the regular medications for the situation.  Hopefully it won't take more than a day or so.

Update on Tempie

Tempie seems to be eating well again.  We've cut back her dose of medication to see if she will still eat with less of it in her system.  I really think she had a bit too much hair in her belly and thus just didn't feel good.

Thanks to everyone who was thinking good thoughts for her.  :-)

Tempie Slowing Me Down

She's not eating again, which means I have to make her eat.  Happily we have some of the right medicine to give her in addition to the feedings.  The vet (and we) hopes it's nothing but a minor hairball.  We'll know in a day or so if the problem will correct itself or if I have to take her south to see the vet.

So for a while this will be my life 3-4 times a day.
Old picture, but it was handy.

Better Buns

Just a quick post to let everyone know 'Bert and Tempie are doing much, much better today. They both ate all of their regular food on their own overnight which means I can drastically cut the amount that I had to force-feed them. [In case some folks don't know this tidbit about rabbit care, if a rabbit stops eating for any reason their digestive system can ultimately shut itself down and they will die. To keep this from happening rabbit owners much literally force-feed them a set amount every day along with giving a medication to stimulate the guts to make them hungry.]

Now all I have to do is give them their courses of medicines and keep an eye on them. I'm more worried about 'Bert since he is the most recently sick and was actually closer to death. Tempie just had to get over the soreness in her mouth from having three teeth pulled. She's currently face down in her dish munching away.

On the Road Again

...or at least the bunnies and I are.

FH and I discovered 'Bert laying on his side last night, quite listless and unhappy. Somehow he's gotten an infection and had stopped eating. Luckily it was early enough in the evening that we could call our vet's emergency cell phone and start making plans. Even more lucky Tempie had some dental work done last week and we had some specific medicines on hand to get him through the night.

My mom is on her way up here to fetch the three of us down to St. Louis (again) so 'Bert can see our bunny vet (again) and hopefully we will be home (again) no later than Wednesday. I say (again) since we were just at the vet's with both bunnies last Tuesday. 'Bert had a physical and was given a clean bill of health. So something got to him between that last appointment and Saturday night. Ugh.

Tempie's still nursing her three molar extractions from last week and thus needs more constant care during the day, so she gets to come too.

FH will be staying here to work and take care of the cats and mice. He's got the cushy deal I think...

Give and Take

FH gave me whatever viral nastiness he came down with last week. I am typing with tired hands and bleary eyes right now. He has run off to play in the woods with a compound bow and arrows tipped with broadhead points. Hopefully he gets something; the freezer is getting bare.

The washing machine drama is not yet over. It was supposed to come with the new dryer on Thursday. Somehow the washer ended up being marked for dock pick up at a store two and a half hours from our house whilst the dryer showed up on time. They tried bringing us the washer today but the wrong one was on the truck. I'm about ready to start spitting nails, but I fear the loss of iron would make me feel even worse.

Five days ago my nephew and his wife welcomed their third child into this world. Baby Beau joins big sister, Sadie, and big brother, Levi. For those of you wondering about generational mathematics, this particular nephew and niece-in-law are the same age as me. That's what happens when you have brothers and sisters old enough to be your parents.

I finished the layette. It still needs to be washed and blocked but here are pictures of the jacket:I made the 6 month size, so it will not fit our friend's daughter until Easter. But I think it will look great over an Easter dress. :-)

Jumping back to the family news, I decided it would be fun to make matching sweaters for Sadie, Levi, and Beau. I found a pattern for a vest with a hood in one of my crochet books. Each one will be a different color and size, but otherwise they will match. I thought them posing together in their sweaters would be a fun picture opportunity for their parents.

I've started on Levi's already. I'm actually further along than these pictures suggest. The back is finished and I've almost gotten one of the front pieces finished. I really just don't feel like playing with the camera right now. Here's a closer look at the texture.I'm using a DK yarn by Sirdar for all three of them. Levi's is called "blue twist."

I know I still need to get the promised pictures of my treasure from Jodi up here. Maybe if I can find some energy I can fight my way through the jumble of furniture (everything is still out of place from the attempts at large appliance delivery) to where I stashed her away from the cats. I think I will go ponder the situation and see what happens.

Thank You!

Just a quick note to say thank you to everyone for their warm thoughts and good vibes while we prepared for Tempie's surgery.

She's having issues eating again, but I know from past experiences that post-dental surgery aftermath doesn't lend itself to making one hungry. So we're back to her "favorite" pumpkin trick again.

I'll be around as time permits this week. Between her feedings and getting some projects finished the blog may be quiet a few more days.

Thanks again, everyone!

And There Was Much Rejoicing!

Tempie made it!

Now we can take her home and get her eating again normally.

However, she will have to go back in six months to get at least one, if not two, teeth pulled. The right side of her mouth is full of teeth that do not grow right and they will continue to be infected, break, and grow points that stab her tongue. Once all the bad teeth are gone, the teeth on her left side will grow right because she will be able to finally chew properly.

Gotta go. I have a bunny to cuddle.

Tempie Bun

The latest on Tempie is she's actually eating enough on her own. This means she and I are both free from the stresses of canned pumpkin, at least for the time being. The pain medication is helping tremendously. The signs of infection/fever are also abating. Her activity level has increased a bit.

We are taking her for surgery Friday morning. The vets will be removing at least one tooth and filing down the other molars. They may also clip a bit more off her incisors since I don't think they did enough when we were there last week.

The bad part about this surgery is the tooth they need to extract is one they tried taking out before. It's in a really bad spot and the roots are wrapped where they shouldn't be. She ended up almost bleeding to death last time. According to the vet, she looked pink when they got the bleeding under control. They had to keep her overnight then and push fluids so she could start making new blood. This is the other reason the surgery is on Friday; we can pick her up Saturday if necessary.

FH and I are going to be camped out with both rabbits at my mom's house from Thursday night until either Saturday night or Sunday morning. 'Bert is going with to get a check up, which leaves just the cats and mice here. Little D's mom is going to come over and feed them for us.

Hopefully during the week I can get some sewing posts up and running. Or even (dare I think it?) some miniatures going again. ;-)

Screeching Halt

The sewing has come to a screeching halt as Tempie is very sick. One of her molars is infected and needs to come out since it's also broken. This is the same tooth that the vet tried to remove once before and she nearly bled to death.

Needless to say, we're all (including her veterinarians) slightly apprehensive about the prospects of this procedure. However the situation can be summed up by the following points:

1. We ignore the issues and she dies in a slow and painful manner

2. We go forward with the surgery and she dies under anesthesia with no pain

3. We go forward with the surgery and all of the vets' skills and a lot of good fortune will give her more time to enjoy life.

Obviously we're hoping for option 3.

Since she won't eat on her own right now, much of my day is spent feeding her by hand. The goal is to get more food into the bunny than onto the bunny and myself, but that isn't always the case.

For the curious or those who may need the information, I'm feeding her 3 tablespoons of canned pumpkin (if you have fresh and want to boil it, go for it) mixed with about 1 tablespoon of baby food bananas and some water. I've used fresh bananas before but they aren't always ripe when I need them.

Of course this means we both end up orange.
