Hey Casey!

So after trying and failing to get these pics resized enough for Casey to see them emailed, I'm throwing them onto the blog.

We were trying to figure out a way for the outsides to possibly get covered, or even painted so they don't look the same.

Any ideas would be welcome. :-)

Stash post will happen when I get back fro running with my girl-friends. They want to hear about the face bashing in person. I think it's so they can "laugh with me"... yeah right. ;-)

Today So Far

Well I believe I have stopped work for a while today. I ended up bashing myself in the face with the nursery's box. Patch feels bad because it happened while he was barking at me for working on something other than the Greenleaf. I was in the middle of setting the floor in place but one edge was a tad to wide so I was turning the box upside down to extract and trim it.

It's going to bruise for sure, but my teeth are intact. Interior bleeding was minimal as well.

I did manage to not only still get the floor in the nursery, but also finished the flooring in the Greenleaf. Here's the nursery floor. I managed to not bleed on anything. That makes me happy.
The chair and a bookcase are currently drying in the garage from being sprayed with varnish. A few accessories are finished and in their places, and I whipped up a quick and easy throw rug for the upstairs. Here's the pup of the hour on the throw rug.

This one was easy. I found a scrap of upholstery fabric leftover for a project my mom did a while back. It was mostly squared up already so I just pulled out threads on the short ends to make fringe and puled a few from the long ends to even it out. Then I smeared the edges with Fray Check (love that stuff). After it dried I trimmed the fringe to length and cleaned up the long edges. The baseboards for the first floor are cut. I need to stain them and the pieces for a bed, but the maintenance crew are mowing. Grass bits are flying everywhere, so no staining until they are done and the grass has settled.

So I guess I will go read a book or work on the stitched rug for a while. I really don't feel like doing much. Heh. People are going to think FH hit me if this swells anymore. Good thing he was at the office. ;-)

If I get anymore done today I will let you know.

Monday's Progress

First I want to thank everyone who helped me choose a floor for the nursery. I think I just needed to know I was leaning in the right direction. The wooden floor has been given about three coats of spray varnish.
It's shiny now. :-)

Sunday night Patch was disgusted that I hadn't done anything, so pulled out one of my favorite books with pictures and made him suffer through a photo shoot.
Doesn't he look disgusted? ;-) It shut him up though. I use the same trick on the cats when they will not leave us alone.

The remaining floor I needed for the Greenleaf got prepped and cut to fit yesterday. I will be installing it today. I also got the rest of the baseboard cut for the nursery. I'll get a picture of it later.

I also started painting that chair yesterday. I wanted it to look like the stain and varnish were rubbing off with age.

I started with a coat of gesso over the whole piece. When that was dry I used the stain packet from the Chrysenbon kit over the gesso, but only on the chair frame. The result was exactly what I wanted. Then I painted the seat red.

At this point I was starving, but Patch didn't want me to stop working. So I bribed him. ;-)

After everything dried really well I gave the whole thing a coat of watered down black paint.
It really makes the faded bits stand out and accents the seat's details. Patch approves. I also made him a box of biscuits. Hopefully that will give me ammunition later when he complains.
I still have some laundry to do, but my kitchen no longer looks like a four year old tried to make pancakes in it. I'll see what I can get done today in between occurrences of housework.

Flooring Options for Boy Nursery - Any ideas?

I have two of the three flooring options in my possession. The first is this lovely paper that can be spray with varnish to actually look more like wood. [Yes I still need to cut the rest of the baseboard. It's on the list for today. ;-) ]

I think it looks ok. I would have to stitch a carpet or rug eventually to warm up the room, but that doesn't bother me. I could probably use the border animals in the design somehow.

The next option is another paper. It's from the same scrapbook paper collection as teh paper on the walls. Again I would need to stitch something.I don't know if it would look too busy though. Even with furniture, toys everywhere, and a rug. Just not sure.

The third option would be either an off-white or pale yellow carpet. I don't have any here or else I would show them with the walls. Off-white would be the safest in terms of ordering sight unseen.

What do you all think?

I've got varnish drying on some floor for the Greenleaf and I think I've figured out how I'm going to paint the chair. It's also gorgeous out so I can hopefully get some stain on some furniture pieces.

I've got laundry spinning and a piece of red velvet cake for my tea later. I had best get a move on. Maybe then the disgusted grunts coming from Patch in the Greenleaf will cease. ;-)

Busy Saturday

FH and I had a full day yesterday. He did some errands and went to work for a while. I did house chores and put together a couple of furniture kits while watching the season finale of Grey's Anatomy. The chair is for the Greenleaf. The crib will be for one of the nurseries. Not sure yet. I have another kit to dig out and assemble. The bunny decal will go on whichever crib goes in the girl's nursery.

That crib was so bloody fiddly to get together. I ended up building a jig out of Legos to not only hold the 90 degree angles, but to also hold the release rails in place while the glue dried. I'm not sure if I will use the plastic mattress that came with the crib or not. We'll see. I like this kit because the side rails are movable and the mattress spring can be raised or lowered like a real crib. I wish I had another one for the second room.

When he came home we ran to our local farmer's market and to Menard's for some gardening stuff. Then we moved the pavers that I placed to the spot where we needed more and he installed another raised bed. A friend of ours started some yellow squash plants over the winter and had extra. But we didn't have anywhere to put them. Now we do.
I need to properly set those pavers still, but I was trying to hurry out of FH's way so he could cut the board for the raised bed.

Once the gardening was taken care of, FH and I were taken on a walk by Confetti. She had such a good time. She really made the boys jealous with her adventure. I am going to try and take at least one of the boys out later today.

After we tucked Confetti back in the house we changed into old clothes and went to Holly's new house to help them paint more. Daughter's room is finished. Master bedroom/bath, son's room, and guest room all had one coat of paint when the four of us stopped for the night. She's hoping B can get a second coat of paint in their son's room today, but he goes to college on the weekends so we're not sure if he will have time.

FH and I got home around midnight. Critters were fed and we collapsed.

We're headed out today for the Long Rifle meeting. I'm hoping to get some time today for minis. I need to get a floor into the Greenleaf and baseboards cut.

Last Thursday's Project, aka My Third Post on Wednesday

I've probably kept several of you in suspense with the mutterings about the project I started last week that Confetti spilled water on. It's now where I wanted it to be to show off. ;-)

So here is the start of a nursery for a baby boy.

I started with this storage box with three clear sides. I found them at a store here called "Tuesday Morning." There is a lid, but that picture is on the desktop computer that is turned off due to the lightning storm.
I used foam core board to create an insert of four walls, three of which have openings cut in them. Then I used scrapbook paper as wallpaper and a large border in the place of waistcoating. The stripes needed something to break them up. And the little animals were too cute not to use.

Originally I had planned on using the Noah's Ark dollhouse paper by Mini Graphics, but the height and placement of the windows into this room went right through the design. In frustration I started flipping through a book of scrapbook paper that was themed for baby boys. I found the blue stripes, but there were only two sheets of each paper in the book. FH and my friend, Holly, both agreed that the contrasting bubbles design of the second paper worked with the stripes. Both designs came from the same collection so the colors all blend. Using the jungle animal border pulled the walls together.Sorry this picture isn't as clear. I couldn't get the camera to work right. The two side walls still need baseboard. I also don't know what I'm going to use as a floor yet. The walls will still fold inward and come out of the box, so I can lay the floor down and then set the walls right back inside.

There are three options for the floor right now. I only have one of them currently, a piece of scrapbook paper that coordinates with the walls. The other options are a neutral piece of carpet or a hardwood floor pattern on paper that I've order from Hobby Builder's Supply. I'm going to wait and look at each of them with the walls. I will take pictures too.

I have a matching box that I'm going to turn into a nursery for a baby girl. I've already cut the inner walls, but the wallpaper is on order. I would have used scrapbook paper for this one, but I saw some adorable wallpaper with baby bunnies on the Miniature Cottage website. Unless it gets here and looks all wrong in person I will be using it for the girl's version.

There are two more boxes like these in my craft room. The first is a bit smaller than the first two and I'm going to put a bakery in it. The other one is the smallest size I could find at the store. I'm going to carefully cut it apart to figure out how they were made so I can maybe make others with different fabric.

So for the moment I'm done with the structures until the second paper and floor options get here. I do have kits for furniture to put together but I don't know when I will actually get around to working on them. The "swarm of gnats" in my head are buzzing about the Greenleaf contest deadline (which I don't know if I will make) and the Orchid kit. Not to mention the backlog of polymer clay things I am set to work on. Oh and the hunting cabin for FH's nightstand, possibly finishing the cafe, cutting protective plastic for the Independence Day and Conservatory bags, taking pictures of my mini stash, searching for crocheted doilies that I "put somewhere safe..." You get the idea. ;-)
